Who's your messiah now?
After reading Ron Suskind’s article (link) on George W. Bush, religion and reality in addition to another article that describes his faith as a sort of New Age EST-style evangelism. I’ve come away thinking that perhaps the quote about the reality-based community is actually a clue that reveals more about the Bush II presidency, Karl Rove, the Bush family and power politics in America.
What if the story of GW’s salvation by evangelical Christianity IS the created reality?
In the NYT article, GW gets drunk at Kennebunkport, becomes insulting in front of his mother and her friends and the elder Bushes decided that they’ve had “enough” and call in family friend Rev. Billy Graham. After a weekend of long walks on the beach and talking, Jesus Saves and GW is born again. Soon after, he gives up drinking, becomes a good family man and begins attending bible study classes in Texas.
If this story reads like the script from a Lifetime Movie of the Week, well maybe it is one! The Bushes, despite their Texas ties, are old money New England stock. These are people who are famous for practicing a reserved Protestantism devoid of talk of meeting Jesus and such. When a family like this has “had enough” they are more likely to send him to a swank detox clinic than send in someone to help him discover God!
However, as a tactic, being born again would work marvelously. Bush I discovered that the evangelicals were a force of nature in the electorate and he paid a political price for ignoring them. Later, when he ran again for president, he learned how to speak to them and to court them and they helped him win.
What if the Bush political machine saw George II as the ideal lump of clay for their evangelical golem? George II has all the qualities that his father lacked: a Texas drawl, a disdain for all things intellectual, a comfortable outgoing personality coupled with a dark side, waywardness, alcoholism, drug abuse. Why not fashion the perfect evangelical candidate—a fallen man (but not too fallen) who gave his life over to Jesus, who can speak in the simple straightforward language of fundamentalist Christianity?
Thus George II was “reborn”, a team was assembled (Rove, Cheney, James Baker etc). and the push towards the presidency was set into motion.
Therefore the public is being duped in the world's biggest "in joke" and the religious right is the most duped of all.
Let's hope more reality based people head for the polls on November 2 and we can have the last laugh.
